Fix Your Bent Glasses - DIY

— feeling cool

It has happened to almost all glass-wearers. You put your eyeglasses down, maybe hop into the shower, and the next thing you hear is a crunch and you know your eyeglasses were harmed. Maybe it was the dog, maybe a relative or perhaps you sat on them because, well, you weren’t wearing your glasses! No matter how it happened, your beloved glasses are now bent. What do you do about it?

You could order a new pair of eyeglasses but that costs money and takes too long to arrive. And if the glasses that just got damaged are one of your favorites, you surely don’t want to throw them in the trash just yet. Professional repairs are always a smart option but why pay for something that can be done for free, at home? So instead of worrying yourself and the social media about your loss, fix your glasses. I am sure there is some way to salvage them. Bent or crooked eyeglasses can always go back to their original shape, you will just have to invest your patience and a little time. Read on to find ways to straighten your crooked glasses.

Word of Caution

Before anything else you must be well aware of what you are about to do. If the glasses in question are prescription glasses, you know you paid a hefty amount of money. Consider this before you set out to work on your glasses. Also, try not forcing them back to shape as that may accidently snap them into two pieces and you definitely don’t want that. Don’t exert outrageous amounts of force and be super gentle. As made abundantly clear earlier by bending, glasses are pretty delicate. Avoid round, jerky, quick movements and apply as little pressure as you can. Nosepiece can be one part that can tolerate maximum pressure but not not the rest of the glasses.

What Needs Repairing?

First and foremost you need to know what to fix before you can go ahead and fix it. You may just know that the glasses don’t sit on your nose comfortably, but where exactly is the problem? If you already know what needs work, great. If not, you can do so by placing your glasses flat on a table or on a leveled surface and observe which side of the glasses is up in the air. That’s the side that needs fixing.

Glasses with Plastic Frames

Usually warm sand is used by eyewear retailers to fix a bent plastic frame. It makes the plastic flexible for correction. If you happen to have access to warm sand, go for it. If not, you can fix your glasses just by using steam or some warm water. All you have to do is fill a bowl with warm water but make sure its not scalding hot. If you can’t touch it, its too hot. You need to place your glasses in this bowl or you could use a stream of hot water or simply steam. Expose them to heat for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. You will feel the fragility when they’re sufficiently warm. Let your thumb make small adjustments and apply very little pressure while you hold them steady. Try them on to see if they need further improvements and repeat the procedure if needed.

Glasses with Metal Frames

To work with metal frames you need a slim piece of cloth or a handkerchief and thin plastic-tipped pliers. Place the cloth on your glasses so as to not impair them. The cloth should be wrinkleless to help you make out where your glasses are bent. Positioning your pliers on the bent area, make necessary adjustments. Remember to not hold them too tightly. Try on your glasses to see if they fit you perfectly now. If not, continue straightening them as needed.

Hope these methods of fixing your precious, crooked glasses help you rescue them. If you are unable to fix them or they’re beyond repair, don’t fret and just purchase new pair of eyeglasses. Thats always a handy solution.
